How to Play Ureni of the Unwritten in Commander

Bracket 3 · Our Ureni of the Unwritten decklist · Dragon Tribal

Our Ureni list is Temur Dragons. Every time Ureni enters or attacks, it looks at the top eight cards and puts a Dragon from among them onto the battlefield free.

The deck ramps with Dragonspeaker Shaman, Urza's Incubator and land ramp, gets Ureni out early, then cheats in Dragons like Scourge of Valkas, Terror of the Peaks and Ureni, the Song Unending with every attack.

01The Commander

Ureni of the Unwritten is a seven-mana 7/7 with flying and trample. Whenever Ureni enters or attacks, look at the top eight cards of your library. You may put a Dragon creature card from among them onto the battlefield.

That is a free Dragon when it lands and another every attack. With about thirty Dragons in the deck, eight cards almost always hit one.

Cost reducers like Dragonspeaker Shaman and Urza's Incubator apply to Ureni because it's a Dragon, and Hellkite Courser can put it onto the battlefield early for one hasty attack.

02How This Deck Wins

  1. 1

    Ramp hard

Cultivate, Encroaching Dragonstorm, Dragonspeaker Shaman and Urza's Incubator get Ureni out around turn five.

  2. 2

    Cheat in Dragons

Ureni puts a Dragon onto the battlefield on entry and every attack. Thundermane Dragon and Whirlwing Stormbrood add more ways to cast them.

  3. 3

    Burn and swing

Scourge of Valkas, Terror of the Peaks and Dragon Tempest deal damage as Dragons enter, and Atarka, World Render gives double strike.

10How to Play

Opening hand

Keep hands with three or four lands and ramp. Ureni costs seven, so ramp and cost reducers matter most.

1

Early gameturns 1-3

Ramp with Farseek, Cultivate or Encroaching Dragonstorm, and play Dragonspeaker Shaman.

2

Mid gameturns 4-7

Cast Ureni around turn five and put a free Dragon onto the battlefield. Attack to get another.

3

Late gameturn 8+

Burn the table with Terror of the Peaks and Scourge of Valkas, and swing with double strike from Atarka, World Render.

Tips

  • Ureni puts the Dragon onto the battlefield, so cast triggers don't happen but enter triggers do.
  • Dragon cost reducers lower Ureni's cost too.
  • Hellkite Courser can bring Ureni in for a hasty attack and a free Dragon.
  • Keep non-Dragon cards low so Ureni's eight-card look always hits.

Common mistakes

  • Casting Dragons from hand when Ureni would put them in free.
  • Overextending into a wipe without Heroic Intervention.
  • Attacking Ureni into deathtouch blockers.
  • Running out of lands in a deck with expensive spells.

Watch out for

  • Board wipes.
  • Removal on Ureni.
  • Counterspells on Ureni.
  • Fliers that block your Dragons.
