How to Play The Ur-Dragon in Commander

Bracket 4 · Our The Ur-Dragon decklist

Our Ur-Dragon list is five-color Dragons. Eminence makes every Dragon cost one less from the command zone, and once The Ur-Dragon is out, every Dragon attack draws cards and puts a permanent from your hand onto the battlefield free.

The deck ramps with Birds, Rivaz and Dragonspeaker Shaman, tutors with Tiamat and Sarkhan's Triumph, and closes with Scourge of Valkas, Terror of the Peaks or a Call the Spirit Dragons win.

01The Commander

The Ur-Dragon is a ten-mana 10/10 flier with eminence: other Dragon spells you cast cost {1} less while it's in the command zone or on the battlefield.

That discount starts on turn one, so every Dragon in the deck is cheaper even if you never cast The Ur-Dragon.

Once it's out, whenever one or more Dragons attack, you draw that many cards, then may put a permanent from your hand onto the battlefield. Hellkite Courser can put it onto the battlefield early for a hasty attack.

02How This Deck Wins

  1. 1

    Ramp into Dragons

Birds of Paradise, Rivaz of the Claw, Dragonspeaker Shaman and Urza's Incubator stack with eminence.

  2. 2

    Find and cast Dragons

Tiamat tutors five Dragons, Ureni of the Unwritten puts them onto the battlefield, and Dracogenesis makes them free.

  3. 3

    Win in the air

Scourge of Valkas and Terror of the Peaks burn the table, or Call the Spirit Dragons wins with five colors of Dragons.

Crux of Fate + Call the Spirit Dragons

10How to Play

Opening hand

Keep hands with three lands, ramp, and a cost reducer or early Dragon. Eminence helps from turn one.

1

Early gameturns 1-3

Ramp with Birds of Paradise or land searches and play Dragonspeaker Shaman or Rivaz of the Claw.

2

Mid gameturns 4-7

Cast Dragons a turn early thanks to eminence. Tiamat refills your hand with Dragons.

3

Late gameturn 8+

Cast The Ur-Dragon or put it in with Hellkite Courser, attack with Dragons, and put free permanents onto the battlefield.

Tips

  • Eminence works from the command zone, so casting The Ur-Dragon is optional.
  • The Ur-Dragon draws for each attacking Dragon, then puts any permanent from hand onto the battlefield.
  • Crux of Fate in Dragon mode hits your own Dragons, so choose non-Dragon.
  • Call the Spirit Dragons needs a Dragon of each color.

Common mistakes

  • Rushing to cast The Ur-Dragon when Dragons are cheaper with it in the command zone.
  • Overextending into a wipe without Teferi's Protection.
  • Choosing the wrong mode on Crux of Fate.
  • Missing land drops in a deck with expensive spells.

Watch out for

  • Board wipes.
  • Counterspells on big Dragons.
  • Fast decks before your Dragons arrive.
  • Enchantment removal on Call the Spirit Dragons.

Bracket4

Our list runs 5 Game Changers (Cyclonic Rift, Demonic Tutor, Rhystic Study, Smothering Tithe, Teferi's Protection). That is more than the Bracket 3 limit of three, so we call it Bracket 4 at the table.

The deck wins with big Dragons and has no two-card infinite combos.
