How to Play Magda, Brazen Outlaw in Commander

Our Magda list is mono-red Dwarves and Treasure. Every time a Dwarf you control becomes tapped, Magda makes a Treasure, and five Treasures fetch any artifact or Dragon straight onto the battlefield.

The deck taps Dwarves constantly by crewing Vehicles like Smuggler's Copter, using Springleaf Drum and attacking, makes every creature a Dwarf with Maskwood Nexus and changelings, and cashes Treasure in for Portal to Phyrexia, Hellkite Tyrant or Goldspan Dragon.

01The Commander

Magda, Brazen Outlaw is a two-mana 2/1. Other Dwarves you control get +1/+0, and whenever a Dwarf you control becomes tapped, you create a Treasure.

Attacking, crewing a Vehicle, tapping for Springleaf Drum and tapping for an ability all count. A board of four Dwarves that crews and attacks makes several Treasures a turn.

Her last ability sacrifices five Treasures to search your library for an artifact or Dragon and put it onto the battlefield, such as Portal to Phyrexia for nine mana's worth of effect.

Opening hand

Keep hands with two or three lands, Magda-friendly Dwarves and a way to tap them like a Vehicle or Springleaf Drum.

Early gameturns 1-3

Cast Magda on turn two, then cheap Dwarves and Smuggler's Copter or Springleaf Drum.

Mid gameturns 4-7

Tap Dwarves every turn for Treasure. Add Maskwood Nexus or Roaming Throne to multiply it.

Late gameturn 8+

Sacrifice five Treasures to fetch Portal to Phyrexia or Hellkite Tyrant, and swing with Torbran-boosted Dwarves.

Tips

  • Crewing taps the creatures, so each Dwarf that crews makes a Treasure.
  • Magda counts any Dwarf becoming tapped, including tapping as a cost.
  • Changelings are Dwarves, so they trigger Magda.
  • Save Treasures for Magda's five-Treasure tutor when you need a specific artifact or Dragon.

Common mistakes

  • Cracking Treasures for small spells instead of saving five.
  • Overextending into a wipe with your small Dwarves.
  • Forgetting Magda pumps only other Dwarves.
  • Losing Magda without a backup Treasure plan.

Watch out for

  • Artifact wipes that hit Treasure and Vehicles.
  • Board wipes like Blasphemous Act from opponents.
  • Removal on Magda.
  • Fliers your ground Dwarves can't block.
