How to Play Baylen, the Haymaker in Commander

Our Baylen list is a Naya Rabbit tokens deck with 20 copies of Hare Apparent. Each Hare makes more Rabbits than the last, and Baylen turns all those tokens into mana, cards and a huge trampling commander.

Token doublers like Doubling Season, Parallel Lives and Mondrak multiply every Hare, and the deck can win with a giant Baylen, an alpha strike, Impact Tremors damage, or Halo Fountain's alternate win.

01The Commander

Baylen, the Haymaker taps your tokens for value. Two untapped tokens make one mana of any color, three draw a card, and four put three +1/+1 counters on Baylen and give it trample.

Because Baylen taps tokens instead of creatures with summoning sickness rules, fresh tokens can pay for its abilities the turn they arrive. Twenty Rabbits are ten mana, six cards, or fifteen counters.

Seedborn Muse and Prop Room untap your tokens on every other player's turn, so you can use Baylen on each opponent's turn too.

04The Hare Apparent Engine

Twenty copies of one card is the heart of the deck. Every copy is better than the last.

Hare ApparentMakes a 1/1 Rabbit for each other Hare Apparent you control. With a doubler out, the fourth copy makes six tokens.
Finneas, Ace ArcherEvery attack puts a +1/+1 counter on each other token and Rabbit, and draws a card once your power hits 10.
Cadira, Caller of the SmallWhen it connects, you make a Rabbit for every token you control. That can double your board in one hit.
Jacked RabbitMakes Rabbits equal to its power each attack, and draws a card if you cast it for five or more.

Each Hare's Rabbits are doubled. Five Hares with Doubling Season make twenty tokens.

10How to Play

Opening hand

Keep hands with two or three lands and two or more Hare Apparents, or ramp plus a token doubler. Baylen wants tokens around it by turn four.

Early gameturns 1-3

Ramp with Rampant Growth or Nature's Lore and start casting Hare Apparent. Each one gets better, so play them every turn.

Mid gameturns 4-7

Cast Baylen and a token doubler like Parallel Lives or Doubling Season. Tap tokens for mana to cast more Hares and for cards to keep your hand full.

Late gameturn 8+

Flood the board, then attack with Jetmir, Nexus of Revels buffs, grow Baylen with four tokens at a time, or win with Halo Fountain.

Tips

  • Baylen can tap summoning-sick tokens, so new Rabbits pay for abilities immediately.
  • Cast Hares one at a time: each counts the others already on the battlefield.
  • With Doubling Season, Baylen's counter ability gives six counters instead of three.
  • Hour of Reckoning destroys only nontoken creatures, so it is nearly one-sided here.

Common mistakes

  • Tapping all your tokens before blockers are needed.
  • Overextending tokens into a board wipe without Heroic Intervention.
  • Casting a doubler late instead of before your Hare wave.
  • Forgetting that Halo Fountain needs fifteen tapped creatures to untap.

Watch out for

  • Board wipes, especially -1/-1 effects.
  • Token hate like Rest in Peace effects on tokens or Hallowed Moonlight.
  • Fliers you can't block.
  • Removal aimed at Baylen.
